This is the first cake in my "Basket of Flowers" series, and you will see as the series progresses, the style of the basket weaving changes slightly. You would not believe how easy it is to make this cake, or any variation of this cake to be honest.
First things first, you need an iced cake and the decorating tip 47 (see picture). Learning how to pipe a basketweaveing pattern was not difficult, and Wilton provides online instructions here but to be honest, I found this video to be extremely helpful in learning. Once you get the hang of the pattern, it is super easy to just continue along around the cake and voila you are done! The flowers were made using Wilton Button Flower Fondant Cut & Press Set which I found really simple to use. I preferred to use this cutter set because it produced a variety of different yet simple flowers and it is super easy to switch around the colors.
When I started to make this cake, I had no real expectation on where the cake would go. In fact at first, there was only the basket weaving on the side of the cake and the fondant flowers on top. I added in the border around the top trim last minute to add an extra edge to the cake. Personally, I really like how this cake turned out and I think the color combination is just beautiful, perfect for a baby shower occasion. Good luck making this cake and feel free to contact me if you would like to order it or if you have any questions!
