Sometimes the most basic of cake designs, turn out to be more creative and artistic than originally imagined. The great thing about this cake that I made, is the amount of variations that can come from this one simple template. To be honest, this was one of the first cakes that I actually made and decorated by myself. When I first started, I had no real idea on where it was going but as I went on, I had a feeling on what it will turn out to look like.

I started with a template of a cupcake that I carefully traced with piping gel and transferred it on to an iced cake Then I traced the outline on top of the cake using buttercream icing. After that I filled in the spaces in between and added a bit of decoration on top. Next, using a turntable I iced a border around the bottom of the cake, but found that it needed another layer. So instead of making the same exact border again, I switched the colors to make the cake more colorful.

Lastly, I felt like the top was a bit empty so I created another border pattern but on the top edge of the cake. Instead of doing the same pattern as I did on the bottom, I made a double colour border using the star tip. After all this, I still felt like the middle part was still missing something, so added a bit of extra dots, in both colors, between the borders and the cupcake design. It was that easy to assemble, once I had a basic idea of what I wanted the finished product to look like. Good luck making this cake or if you would like to order it, feel free to contact me!

How to Transfer a Piping Gel Pattern:

YOU WILL NEED:

  • Pen or pencil

  • Pattern outline/template

  • Decorating bag with tip 1, filled with clear (or colored) piping gel

  • Parchment paper

  • Flat iced cake

  • Decorator brush (optional)

WHAT TO DO:

  1. Place parchment paper over the pattern and trace with pencil or pen, turn paper over.

  2. Using piping gel, glide tip along the surface and trace the pattern on the parchment paper

  3. Place the paper, gelled side down on the iced cake, use brush to gently trace over the gel lines

  4. Lift the paper and pattern will be transferred to cake.
